Turn the carbon border into a defensible cost.

Symbiote is an engineering-to-business studio. We quantify what the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism costs your exports — then engineer the cheapest path to cut it.

CBAM in one minute

What the carbon border actually does to your exports.

No jargon. Here is how the cost arises, where it's heading, and the fastest way to bring it down.

01

You produce

Your goods carry embedded CO₂ from fuels, electricity and process.

02

Importer declares

Your EU buyer reports those emissions to the authorities.

03

Certificates bought

They surrender CBAM certificates priced off the EU carbon market.

04

Cost reaches you

That charge flows back through your contract — it's your bill.

The importer can't file without your emissions data — so your numbers set the price. Get them right and verified, and you control the cost.

The bill ramps to 2034

20262.5%20302034100%

CBAM charges a rising share of your embedded CO₂ — from 2.5% in 2026 to 100% by 2034. Doing nothing gets more expensive every year.

Verified data is the quick win

2.30 1.30 EU default Verified −45%

EU default values are deliberately conservative. Verified actual emissions routinely cut the charge — often several-fold — before any capital spend.

Levers ranked by €/tonne

€/tCO₂ Effic. Fuel Electr. CCU CCS saves €

We map each abatement option by cost per tonne of CO₂ avoided, so you start where the saving is cheapest and biggest.

Charts are illustrative and use published phase-in factors and a worked urea example (2.30 → 1.30 tCO₂e/t). Your figures are modelled from your own data during the assessment.

The moment

CBAM is now a bill, not a report.

Since 1 January 2026 the mechanism is in its definitive, paying phase. The question is no longer if — it's how much, and how to bring it down. Here's how we get you there.

CBAM Exposure Assessment

One fixed thing, done well: what the border costs you to 2034, and the most cost-effective ways to reduce it.

What it delivers

Your exposure, modelled and de-risked

Screening-grade and verification-ready — built so the numbers survive an accredited verifier's review later.

  • CBAM cost exposure, modelled year-by-year 2026→2034
  • The saving from verified actual emissions vs EU default values
  • Abatement options ranked by cost per tonne CO₂ — efficiency, fuel switching, electrification, CCS/CCU, origin carbon price
  • Funding eligibility screening (EU & national programmes)
  • Prioritized action roadmap + compliance set-up (declarant status, MRV)

About the studio

Most carbon advice is either spreadsheets without engineering — or engineering without a business case. Symbiote is built where the two meet.

An engineering-to-business advisory working across Paris and Baku. We bring process-engineering depth to the carbon question: modelling production routes, fuels and energy the way someone who has designed plants would — so the abatement options on the table are real, costed, and ranked by what they actually save. Methodology is aligned to recognised GHG-accounting standards and structured to be confirmed by an independent ISO 14065 verifier.

Questions

The things buyers ask first.

Do we need verified emissions data to start?

No. The essentials — products and CN codes, EU export volumes, fuels and electricity use, and country of production — are enough for a first exposure figure. Where data is missing, official EU default values are used, and the assessment shows exactly which figures are worth getting verified to lower your cost.

Is this an official CBAM filing?

No. The output is a screening-grade exposure assessment and decision tool. Any number used for an official CBAM declaration must later be confirmed by an independent ISO 14065-accredited verifier — the work is structured to make that step straightforward.

How long does it take?

About two to three weeks from kick-off: roughly a week for data collection, a week for modelling and abatement / funding analysis, and the final stretch for reporting and the presentation meeting.

Which sectors does CBAM cover?

The covered goods include iron & steel, aluminium, cement, fertilisers, hydrogen and electricity, plus certain downstream products. If you export any of these to the EU, you are likely in scope.

How is our data handled?

All information is treated as confidential and used solely for the assessment. A mutual NDA can be signed before any data is shared.
